Posture is Sexy
Working your tail off in the gym is a great thing. Dressing great is a beautiful thing. Slouching and having poor posture is NOT cool at all. Dapper Fitness is about being confident in yourself and showing the world you are proud of who you are. Having the body of a Greek God and dressing sharp are key but will be overshadowed if you walk around with your head down, and your shoulders hunched over.
Don’t be a hunchback!
I want to stay on track about posture, but first, real quick, I want to say that I’m a firm believer in the Law of Attraction. You get what you put out! And I believe poor posture which can say “I’m not confident,” or “I don’t feel good about myself,” isn’t the message you want to be sending. So get your posture correct, and your life will change in a multitude of ways.
5 Steps to Good Posture
- You want to keep your ears, shoulders and hips in alignment. Whether you’re standing or sitting down, keeping these in a vertical line will improve your posture. Sitting and staring at a TV or computer will tend to make you push your head forward. You need to avoid this. Start paying attention to your head region to notice if your ears start getting ahead of your shoulders. Where you head goes, your body follows. Below is a picture of good posture and how it goes poor over time.
Ever notice how babies sit perfectly? Poor posture is a learned habit over time. Become aware and you can prevent poor posture. LINK to a video on posture exercises.
- This is my favorite technique that I learned a few years ago.The Balloon Trick! This idea takes care of many posture issues without having to think of too much. You want to pretend there is a balloon on a string attached to the top of your head. The balloon is pulling your head up to the sky. This will make you stand more upright. If you keep doing the balloon trick, you’ll develop a nice upright posture. Whenever I feel my posture being poor I think “balloon,” and my posture immediately improves.
- Become aware of your posture. Awareness is a big step, so pay attention to your body. You can try to improve your posture, but forget for hours at a time. This is why forming a habit is so important. The easiest way to remember your posture is to leave yourself visual clues. You’re human, you have work, outside distractions, etc. You will get distracted and forget. But if you put a note at your desk, in your car, and other places where it will catch your eye, you’ll remember to pay attention to your posture. Success is doing small things over and over. Go make a few sticky note reminders!
- Movement is very important. Today’s world is largely based on white collar word. We sit A LOT! Sitting for long periods of time is one of the worst things for posture. Your muscles get lazy and you want to slouch. The best remedy is to stand up every 30-45 minutes. Go on a quick walk to the break room if your job allows. Stretch for a minute or two. At the very least, just stand up with good posture for 1-2 minutes.
- As I mentioned earlier, posture projects confidence but being confident affects posture as well I believe. The more confident you are, the better your posture will be. Confidence is a habit just like posture. It can be learned as well. Building a dapper fit body and dressing well will help you be more confident in yourself.
Start to be aware of your posture and find what works best for you. Project to the world that you are confident and proud of who you are. You’ll find a lot of things will improve in your life.
Stand tall and be confident!
